The Fellow’s role involves an independent operating list as well as operating with the consultant surgeons. The Fellow is also actively involved in teaching of junior medical officers and students via Mater Medical Education Unit and University of Queensland.
The unit performs level 1 and level 2 oncoplastic procedures, with exposure to complex Breast Cancer Care: Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic, Multidisciplinary Breast Reconstruction Clinic and BreastScreen Queensland. The Plastic and Reconstructive Unit shares prosthetic reconstructions, and performs immediate autologous reconstructions.
Office ultrasound, SPY Camera, DaVinci Robot are all available. Saviscout and Trident HD have been introduced. There is a general surgery on-call commitment, one-in-three, with the participation of the Fellow being that of a junior consultant with the on-call PHO/Trainee reporting to the Fellow.
The Unit also has a significant component of endocrine surgery, especially thyroid and parathyroid, and services the busy obstetric endocrinology departments. There is also a component of sarcoma and melanoma surgery. There is a monthly Endocrine MDT shared with Endocrinology.
