Position Description

The Breast/Endocrine Surgical Fellow position at the Princess Alexandra Hospital is a fully funded post which also offers experience in breast surgery, endocrine surgery, and acute general & trauma surgery. The position offers great exposure to the management of benign and malignant breast conditions in a multidisciplinary setting. The unit manages approximately 250 new breast cancer cases per year and case management is discussed in a weekly Breast Oncology MDT session. The unit performs level 1 and level 2 oncoplastic procedures, and reconstructive surgery is also undertaken in conjunction with our Plastic Surgery Unit with whom we have an excellent working relationship and with whom we also conduct regular Plastic Surgery MDT meetings. Fellows will attend at least 5 operating session per week. Fellows also gain training in breast ultrasound with surgeon-performed ultrasound utilized in both the OPD arena and in the operating theatre. Fellows are encouraged to obtain the Breast CCPU accredited by ASUM.

The unit also operates a High Risk Familial Breast Cancer Clinic offering management options for women at high risk of familial breast cancer working in conjunction with Genetic Health Queensland. Women are risk assessed and management options of screening, risk-reducing drug therapy and prophylactic surgery are discussed and tailored according to the patient’s circumstances. The unit also provides ample opportunity for research, and candidates encouraged to publish at least two scientific papers during their time in the unit.

Summary Hospital Information

Breast Oncoplastic Surgery:

Oncoplastic Level 1: > 100 cases per annum; Oncoplastic Level 2: 30 - 40 per annum

Breast Reconstruction Surgery:

Yes: Goldilocks Mastectomy, Prosthetic reconstructions, Autologous reconstructions

General and Other Surgery:

Yes: Endocrine caseload approx. 150 per annum, General caseload approx. 75 (on-call)

Breakdown of hours:

On-call, Weekdays (Thursdays), Weekends (Monthly)

Private Consulting:

No private consulting; only private surgical assisting as required

MDT:

Breast Cancer: Weekly, Role of Fellow: Meeting Facilitator | Endocrine: Monthly, Role of Fellow: Paricipant | Oncoplastic: Fortnightly, Role of Fellow: Facilitator | PAH Breast Unit has a close working relationship with the Plastic Surgery department— conjoint MDT clinics are conducted on a fortnightly basis.

Academic & Research:

Professor Ian Bennett, Dr Simone Geere & Dr Jeremy Khoo are currently conducting clinical research in which the Fellow will be involved and will provide appropriate supervision for each of these projects. Academic affiliations include University of Queensland, Translational Research Institute and Queensland University of Technology

Funded:

Yes. Full funded 12 month FTE position. Commencing February 2027.

Salary:

This position is classified L10 - L14. Base salary: $164,692 - $181,480 excl. superannutaion. Overtime and holiday loading allowances apply.

Unit meetings: Weekly MDT & Quarterly Unit Audit. Monthly - Grand Rounds Quarterly B&E unit The Fellow has ample opportunity for independent clinical decision making and lead surgery in an MDT environment. The unit sees a high volume of new referrals annually ~ 250 - 350 new cases per year with extensive opportunities to be involved in high quality MDM care as well as advanced surgical techniques with the use of ultrasound and oncoplastic principles.
