The Breast Fellowship offers the fellow the opportunity to work in one of New Zealand’s busiest breast and general surgical services. The successful applicant will be exposed to a broad range of breast disease, benign and malignant. The unit sees 420+ new breast surgery cases per annum.
Multidisciplinary meetings for breast are twice a week, symptomatic and screening. Opportunity exists to work in the screening programme. The unit is served by 7 breast surgeons with 16 general surgeons in total. The service has links with Middlemore Hospital’s Plastic Surgical Unit. Breast reconstruction is performed at North Shore Hospital, and there is ample exposure to all types of breast reconstruction (expander implant and flap). Level 2 oncoplastic procedures are performed regularly.
This fellowship is linked with an exposure to Endocrine (Thyroid/ Parathyroid/ Adrenal), melanoma, head and neck surgery, and general surgery, so is suitable to those that want to continue with general surgery.
An on-call commitment for general surgery is expected. The fellow will staff the acute theatre and take surgical admissions every fourth Friday (there are 3 other fellows in other subspecialties) with the backup of a senior colleague.
There is a service commitment to LA skin cancer. The fellow is expected to conduct ward rounds with junior staff (including advanced trainees in general surgery), and be involved with teaching of junior staff. There is ample opportunity to conduct research.
